The idea behind Carbon

A scattered passion, finally in one place.

Photos lost in your camera roll, figures you know by heart, anecdotes never written down: a passion for cars ends up scattered. Whether you have one car, ten or only dreams, Carbon brings them together, with their spec sheets and your memories. And because your iPhone is always with you, so is your garage, ready to show when a friend asks what you drive.

How it works

Add a car, Carbon does the rest.

All your cars at a glance.

Every car is shown with its photo. At the top are your figures: how many cars, how many marques and what you paid for them in total. Your dream garage has its place too, until the day you tap “I Bought It”.

A complete spec sheet for every car.

Power, torque, 0–62 mph, top speed, engine and gearbox are already filled in and verified. You add what makes yours unique: its colour, its mileage, what you paid for it.

Your collection, in one image.

My Card sums up your garage in one image, ready to send to friends and family. You can hide your prices if you prefer.

And 395 cars, each with its Story

From the next service to the last mountain pass before winter.

A car you own has its due dates, its paperwork and its story. Carbon keeps them together beside its spec sheet, on your iPhone.

Date by date.

Drives, maintenance, moments to remember: each one goes into the car’s logbook on its date, with a photo if you like. When a due date is marked as done, it is noted there too.

What the figures don’t tell you.

In the Stories tab, Carbon tells the story of 395 cars the way a magazine would: how they came about, why they left their mark on their era, the films they appeared in, the rivals they took on. Here are three excerpts.

Two cars head to head. Eight criteria to settle it.

The age-old argument between enthusiasts, settled by the numbers. Pick two cars: Spec Battle compares them on eight criteria, from power to rarity, and each criterion won scores a point. You can then share the duel as a single image, laid out like a poster.

Ferrari F40

Ferrari F40

Enzo Ferrari’s last road car

Launched in 1987 and built until 1992, the F40 is the last road Ferrari signed off by Enzo in his lifetime. It is also a car built against the grain of the Porsche 959, its great rival of the day.

In 1987, Ferrari turns forty. Porsche has just begun delivering the 959: four-wheel drive, active suspension, sequential turbochargers, the electronic supercar taken as far as it will go. Maranello could answer on the same ground. Enzo Ferrari, 89 years old, goes the other way.

Porsche 911 Turbo 3.0

The first turbo 911 and the original 930

One word, painted across an engine cover, became Porsche’s top designation for the next half-century: Turbo. The 930 of 1975 is the car that coined it, and the one that taught the 911 to live with a rush of boost it could not yet contain.

In the early 1970s, Porsche is hunting for a fresh answer to the Italian supercars climbing past it on power. It already has one in its own pit lane: the turbocharger, which the marque took to its limit in Can-Am with the huge 917/10 and 917/30 of 1972-1973. What remains is to make the technology liveable on the road and, harder still, to school the manners of a blown flat-six slung out behind the rear axle, where it unsettles the car most.

Lamborghini Miura P400 SV

Story · Excerpt

Lamborghini Miura P400 SV

The Miura with its faults fixed

The Miura invented the mid-engined supercar. The SV, last of the 764 built and made in just 150 examples, is the one that finished the job: more power, a wider rear track, and on the run-out cars, oil systems no longer shared.

Inventing a genre is one thing; mastering it is another. When Lamborghini showed the Miura in 1965, it settled a new idea: a V12 sitting behind the driver, in a car meant for the road. But the first versions gave away their own daring through teething trouble. The SV, last of the line, is the one that puts it right.
